College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Northwest Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Enrichment Funds

College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Northwest Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Enrichment Fund

In support of the mission of the Council of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at COMP and COMP-Northwest, this fund promotes initiatives and programs that “create and sustain an environment of belonging that supports opportunities for everyone to thrive.” The council seeks to enhance the college’s diversity through recruiting, training and employing an array of students and employees who champion the inclusion and development of unique qualities in each member of the COMP/COMP-NW community. The council aims to develop programs that prioritize equity and inclusion, celebrate commonalities and differences and build bridges and allyships.

In order to better reflect the rich diversity of our nation, the COMP DEI program is committed to providing a culturally sensitive, inclusive and robust curriculum that teaches our students and clinicians about barriers to accessing healthcare, and cohort-specific differences in care to better prepare them to provide competent and informed care to historically marginalized groups.

DIVERSITY TALKS is a Lecture Series designed to empower members of the WesternU COMP & COMP-Northwest community to become active agents of diversity, equity, and inclusion especially in the field of healthcare. The series provides a venue for faculty, staff, and students to deepen and widen their knowledge and awareness of issues and opportunities to eliminate disparities in health care outcomes for marginalized groups in the US. The goal of this lecture series is to motivate our University community to examine outside perspectives, empower critical thinking and promote equitable and fair healthcare outcomes for all. Speakers are chosen to offer platforms for learning and discussion on contemporary topics relative to healthcare disparities and to share their learned perspectives to help us deepen our knowledge and develop skills to break the cycle of privilege, oppression, and strengthens all to become anti-racist. We are in need of funding for the speakers and also possible recognition for specific awardees.

College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Northwest Underrepresented Student Scholarship Fund

WesternU values having a diverse student body both to increase the diversity of the future health care workforce, as well as to prepare all our students to provide the best care for their future diverse patients. Scholarships assist the University in attracting and supporting students from groups who are currently or historically underrepresented in the WesternU student body and/or the professional workforce. While federal law prohibits the University from awarding scholarships to students from a particular racial group or gender, we can award scholarships whose aim is to generally increase the diversity of the student body. And what is considered to be underrepresented can vary from decade to decade and program to program along dimensions such as race, gender, disability, and more

College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Northwest Recruitment Scholarship Fund

In the admissions process, the battle to attract the best and brightest new students can be fierce. While our caring faculty, interprofessional education opportunities and commitment to Humanism are highly valued characteristics, a student’s decision often is most affected by cost. Recruitment scholarships can therefore be a deciding factor for the most sought-after students, who can, in the long term, help COMP attract and retain the best faculty, improve board passing rates, and increase our rankings and reputation.

Dr. Michael J. Hynds Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Michael J. Hynds, a scholarship will be established for students in the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific at Western University of Health Sciences. Michael had a passion for medicine, was a visible leader in and outside of the classroom, and would have graduated at the top of his class. Helping other students realize their dreams of becoming a DO would have made him smile.

Howard Scalone DO Memorial Scholarship

The Howard Scalone DO Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of one of the College’s earliest and most dedicated supporters. Dr. Scalone was an anesthesiologist at Eastmoreland Hospital, where he trained countless medical students and residents over the years, including most of the DOs now on faculty at COMP-Northwest. He rarely missed an interview day to help select the next class of students, and he cheered as each class graduated a few years later. Within the Oregon osteopathic community, Dr. Scalone was one of the giants, whose shoulders were always broad enough to carry many. His wisdom, dedication, kindness, intellectual curiosity, love for osteopathic medicine and all of our students and his love for his family will always be remembered. To honor Dr. Scalone and his commitment to COMP-Northwest, the Howard Scalone DO Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded to a COMP-Northwest student in good academic standing, who is committed to incorporating osteopathic manual manipulation (OMM) into their practice. With the assistance of his friends and family, the legacy of Dr. Scalone will always be a part of WesternU’s COMP-Northwest.

College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Northwest Student Supplies Pantry Fund

Dedicating one’s life to caring for others is the ultimate act of benevolence, but for many desired healthcare occupations, achieving this goal requires a doctoral level degree. Our mission is to ensure the success of a diverse demographic of students who will care for our rural and under-represented communities. The long road through graduate school is challenging, with many students experiencing financial stress and food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to affordable and nutritious food and is not uncommon among students in higher education. Like many health sciences universities across the country, we have established a Care Cabinet on the Oregon campus to ensure the wellbeing of our students. Your monetary donations will help provided just-in-time needs of students who otherwise would have nowhere to turn. Caring for patients and communities is the heart of our students, and our heart is to take good care of them. Please join us in caring for our future caregivers!
