College of Podiatric Medicine Dean's Discretionary Fund

Your charitable investment in the College of Podiatric Medicine’s Dean’s Discretionary Fund will play a major role in executing the University’s mission:

"To produce, in a humanistic tradition, health care professionals and biomedical knowledge that will enhance and extend the quality of life in our communities."

Specifically, a gift to the Dean’s Discretionary Fund provides resources for, among other things, student travel and attendance at professional seminars and student research symposiums. The fund also helps to support the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture series. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of our students.

College of Podiatric Medicine General Scholarship Fund

You can also give to support student scholarships directly. The cost of tuition and student debt remain a top priority for the college and the profession to address. Your direct support of student scholarships allows us to help offset some of that debt and provides our students with increased opportunities for focused areas of study. You can give to the general scholarship fund, or set specific criteria for areas of podiatric medicine as you like. Scholarships can be year to year or at the $20,000+ level can be permanently endowed to provide ongoing perpetual support.

Competency-Based Education Simulation Laboratory

Current podiatric clinical skills education consists of an uncertain volume of high-stakes care in which students and residents learn their skills on actual patients. For example, a podiatry student will perform their first injection on a patient, creating a stressful environment for both the student and the patient. A better method exists to foster our students and residents toward mastery: deliberate practice. In this method a learner develops skills that others have mastered while focusing on well-defined specific goals. A Clinical Simulation Laboratory will allow students the opportunity to certify their skills before moving on to more complex situations.

Scherer/Meltzer Endowed Fellowship in Biomechanics

Dr. Paul Scherer and Dr. Aaron Meltzer approached the College to house the Scherer-Meltzer Fellowship with the intent of educating and training the next generation of podiatrists who would teach biomechanics. This fellowship will provide recent graduates with mentorship and training directly linking them to the foundational pioneers in podiatric biomechanics.

CPM is seeking additional donors to support this important effort. Once fully endowed, CPM would select one DPM per year who has completed their residency. The Fellow would serve as a CPM clinical assistant professor and they would also travel to several of the prominent West Coast podiatric biomechanical labs and learn from those people who run those labs, including DPMs, physical therapists and orthopedists.

Dr. Franklin Kase Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Franklin Kase dedicated his life to his family and to fighting for podiatric physicians to be treated equivalent to our allopathic and osteopathic colleagues. His fervent advocacy and devotion of his time benefited podiatric physicians nationwide for four decades. He achieved many successes leading major national insurers to change policies and protocols impacting equal pay for equal work and scope of practice, and credentialing and privileging practices with insurers and health systems alike.

Dr. Kase’s passion may have been health policy, but he cared about all of his colleagues. He served as the California Podiatric Medical Association president in 2003-2004 and as the American Podiatric Medical Association committee chair of health policy. Dr. Kase made practicing podiatric medicine better for all podiatric physicians.

This scholarship will be awarded to a third- or fourth-year student with a GPA 3.0 or higher who has demonstrated an interest in health policy or exhibits integrity, compassion towards their colleagues and strong leadership skills.
